Global Marketing Intern

September - December 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved everything about this internship. I learned so many amazing things, and it has been a true dream to work at this company. I had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing artists in the world.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program would have been longer, because I had such an amazing experience.

Advice

Because of how amazing of a company this is, when you get there, do everything you can to network. Meet new people in other departments, sit down with your supervisors and get to know them, and overall learn the company. This is a very competitive industry.

Big Red Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I learned A TON and got to see the inner workings of a major record label. We had lunch and learns with a different Columbia Records executive each week, went on site visits to SiriusXM Radio, Giphy, and Madison Square Garden, went to see John Mayer at the Garden and much more. Throughout the summer we worked on a project with a partner in our specific department. My department was Touring and Events, and my partner and I worked on developing an idea for a blockchain ticketing platform for Columbia's many events that they throw. At the end of the summer, we presented it to the top executives from Columbia and Sony.

What I wish was different

In the middle of the summer there was a point where we were in between figuring out and researching our project ideas and then prepping for the presentation where we had a lot of free time. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing - I set up meetings with different employees at various levels to learn more about their experiences and used the time to network and get to know the office/label.

Advice

Meet as many people as you can! They want to meet you and want to tell you about their experience. Talk to everyone. Also, the CEO of Columbia always says that ideas can come from anyone and anywhere, and keep that in mind!

Columbia Frontline A&R Intern

September 2019 • Culver City, CA

What I liked

I love the company culture at Sony. Your advisors really take the work that you do seriously, and want to hear your feedback on upcoming projects. I also liked the freedom that I experience in this role in particular because most of the work I do are independent projects. I get to pitch artists that I care about to the execs, which has been invaluable real-world experience and confidence for me.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would going out into the field would be a bigger part of the experience. You tend to find upcoming artists and connections by going to shows and other industry events. I have heard of other labels bringing their interns along with them to events like these, so I know that it is possible.

Advice

The biggest thing I would suggest is to speak up, get to know those working around you, and be present. I would not treat an opportunity to work at a company like this as just another internship; if you make yourself memorable, you now have a network of people to work in and understand the industry. So, be creative and innovative with your work; do more than the mandatory minimum!

Digital Marketing

May - July 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Everything! The work environment is so amazing, everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. This fall is my third semester there, and I couldn't be happier! I love how they give interns so much responsibility.

What I wish was different

Nothing really! I learned so much in such a short time. I think the only thing would be opening myself up more to the employees, to create genuine connections and friendships.

Advice

Networking is key, and so is being friendly and genuine. Also, making the most out of every day. Time passes so incredibly quickly, before you know it, the internship is already over! So giving it your all, always being busy, and helping everyone possible is the advice I would give!
