Editor Intern

June - August 2023 • Calgary, Alberta

What I liked

Somewhat flexible schedule.

What I wish was different

The amount of training I received for this internship was nowhere near what should have been given for the expectations the company had. Leaders treat college students like we've been in the industry for a while, and rationalize it by saying they're "teaching" students about how things work in the business world. What results is confused interns and frustrated supervisors and a load of miscommunication. Additionally, supervisors don't really seem to talk to HR. I had very specific scheduling needs, and I was told multiple times by HR that I would be accommodated without any issues. Supervisors frequently tried to ask me for time outside of my clearly-stated availability, and I had to explain several times that I needed to adhere to my availability because I had a paying job with hours I scheduled *around my hours at this internship.* I gave them 30ish hours a week, and it felt like it was an expectation to go full-time. I also felt like I was undervalued because of my major. There was some bias toward students in business or communications disciplines, and I felt like my fellow English majors and I were brushed off. Overall, I wish leadership communicated more clearly and that expectations were more clearly communicated in the job postings.

Editor Unpaid Internship

June - August 2023 • Calgary, Alberta

What I liked

Flexible schedule since it was remote

What I wish was different

This company takes SO MANY interns, so it's easy to get into, but in return, the organization within the job is terrible. There's too little people taking care of too many interns, and sometimes, the entire team is full of solely interns who have little instructions and don't know what they're doing. Because there are few people you can ask for, the one or two people that can actually respond to you take too long to respond because they have to take care of so many tasks. Additionally, there is very little training and they expect you to know what you're doing after a week or two. Because of the things mentioned above, many interns quit within 3 months or less, which means the most reliable of interns aren't active for long.
