What I liked

Loved the innovative enviornment Medtronic offered. There was a great balance of very experienced engineers and young engineers.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more college intern engineers in the program. Most interns were with a high school program.

Advice

Look into technicians feedback early on in the design process. The techs have many years of experience and will be able to give feedback on manufacturability or even help create new ideas with you.

What I liked

I enjoyed learning how to write engineering reports, performing hands on testing, and interfacing with surgeons.

What I wish was different

I wish I owned a project that I completed from start to finish.

Advice

Advocate for yourself and make sure that you communicate well with your manager and other colleagues.

What I liked

I was able to have a mentor/boss that would help me improve myself throughout my professional career. I also was able to greatly improve on my Excel skills.

What I wish was different

I came in during a time of restructuring, so the direction was a bit unclear initially.

Advice

Be proactive in the workplace, but not overly pushy.

Electrical Engineering Intern

What I liked

My internship experience was incredibly hands on, and the company was very ready for me with a relevant project, access to all the resources I would need, a manager and mentor with a similar background to myself, and housing for the summer. I really enjoyed getting to work on my own project from the initial development stages to its completion. Overall, Medtronic has a very well organized engineering internship program, and really sets its interns up for potential long-term roles within the company.

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to work on a project within a team of other interns or full-time employees, and across multiple disciplines. I think this would have reflected what a typical engineering project looks like in industry, and would help me get better connected within the company.

Advice

Definitely don't be afraid to ask questions from those around you, everyone in this company is more than willing to lend a helping hand. Also, I found that talking to engineers in other departments was incredibly rewarding as I got to learn about other potential career paths, and see a wider scope of Medtronic's operations as a whole.

What I liked

Office was exceedingly welcoming and open to questions. Had access to informational interviews with employees across varying roles across product lines and locations. Received a lot of hands on experience with products and was given freedom to pursue own project.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to have more say in my project direction. Sometimes the large-company bureacracy slowed progress, which was frustrating.
