What I liked

Everyone was really nice and supportive. It seemed like everyone was invested in you acheiving goals. I definitely felt like I enjoyed it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a project sooner. It took a while, but perhaps that's because of the pandemic just started, and my original project was scrapped. I also had difficulty picking something to do right away, mostly because the projects weren't really software development related. The team at Medtronic was great at coming up with ideas for the project! Great group of people.

Advice

Ask questions. Bother the heck out of your team. They know you're learning and it's expected to be bothersome.

What I liked

Everyone was very nice and open to meeting with me, and I found that they were also committed to helping me progress in my career.

What I wish was different

None of my activities were in-person, and I would've greatly appreciated if they would've made an effort to accommodate an in-person activity. Also, some work just wasn't the right fit for my interests.

Advice

Network with as many people as you can! I was able to shift into a different area and meet tons of new people.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the projects I got to work on- I was able to make improvements to our manufacturing process, specifically in how scrapped product gets captured. Medtronic also assigns each intern a mentor, who is very helpful to ask questions to and bounce ideas off of. My team was welcoming and made sure I knew that my work was valued.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, the internship was entirely virtual. I would've liked to get into the facility and have more of a hands-on aspect to my projects, particularly being in a manufacturing position, but that just wasn't possible with the current situation.

Advice

My advice would be to make your future career goals known to your manager and other people around the office. I was able to stay on part-time this fall, simply because I mentioned to a few people that I was interested in doing this. You never know who will open doors for you if they just know what your objectives are.

Biomedical Engineering Intern

What I liked

Medtronic has a great company culture and the work I did over the summer was both impactful to the team and myself. I felt like they really invested in me and my learning; in return, I created a software tool that greatly improved their efficiency by automating a common process.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have in been on-site and in person; due to COVID-19, however, that was out of their control - despite the circumstance, the experience was amazing!

Advice

A summer internship at a company you know you may want to work at is really important - you learn a lot about industry, your own strengths and weaknesses, and understand if you would like more experiences like that.

Industrial Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked my employer and my team, as well as my peer advisor. I liked the flexibility of having summer hours (8-5pm M-Thurs and 8-12pm on Friday). I liked getting to work on my own projects, as well as projects with my team members. I also liked that I worked on technical projects and projects to improve employee engagement within our team.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been in person at least for part of my internship.

Advice

Ask so many questions, get involved early on, do not be afraid to not know everything and remember that there is so much you can take away from this experience.

What I liked

My mentor was the best thing about my internship at Medtronic. Despite the online setting due to COVID-19, I was able to reach out to him and he was extremely helpful in answering all my questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been an opportunity to connect with the other interns through social events.

Step out of your comfort zone to learn something new. You never know how it may impact you positively in the long run

What I liked

What I like about my job is the wealth of knowledge between all my colleagues and how they have no problem answering questions when asked. I learned a lot about real world experience and how our products make an impact in people in need.

What I wish was different

One thing would be the use of more engineering analysis to solve a problem based on what we learned in our classes.

Advice

A piece of advice I would share would be to ask a lot of questions and learn as much as you can. Get involved in projects without being asked to and share what you can offer based on your knowledge.

Systems Engineering Intern

What I liked

I really liked the group I was working with. Everyone was nice and friendly, and I always had interesting projects to work on. With a larger site like Minneapolis, there are over a hundred other interns working across all of the campuses, so we had a lot of social events to get to know other interns better.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been given the opportunity to explore other areas of engineering such as R&D or other groups outside the business unit I was in.

Advice

Networking is super important to understanding not only your group but the Medtronic culture as a whole. I networked with a lot of people even at different campuses, and it was a great opportunity for me to understand how Medtronic works

What I liked

I loved the company's culture and inclusiveness. I never felt anything short of an full-time employee. The projects were meaningful and challenging. I also loved the people I worked with; they are very knowledgeable and helpful.

What I wish was different

The first few weeks were very dry. It takes a while to get going with a project, but once you are assigned one, it is a lot of fun.

Advice

Network with the people within the company. Be an extrovert; inquire about the projects they are working on and express your interest in working with them.

What I liked

It was a job that I didn't know existed for biomedical engineering majors and it ended up being something I really enjoyed. The job offers me the chance to interact with many different people such as doctors, nurses, patients and other engineers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had received a little more direction while training, but it was also a new internship program so not many people new the plan.

Advice

I would say this isn't a typical job or internship. It is a lifestyle choice since there are days you could be working 4 hours and then other days you could be working over 8 hours and have to drive up to 2 hours away for the day.

Honestly, not much. Handshake does a great job connecting employers and potential employees quickly and simply.

I liked that I got to work with many WPI graduates and it was nice to see that they all starter where I was and moved their way up to higher roles within the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was with another intern, because I was the only intern in my department.

Advice

I would advise people to build relationships with their coworkers in their office. I got really close with not just my mentor, but all of my coworkers in my office, which gave me a very broad networking group in order to get more information about different parts of the company or other companies.

Engineering Contingent

What I liked

As a member of the WISE program, there were a lot of special events I was invited to attend. Medtronic gave women like me great resources and connections in the STEM community. I worked with other interns and co-ops and getting to listen to their experience and advice was highly valuable as I enter my freshman year of college.

What I wish was different

I loved the work I did, but I wish it hadn't been on a medical device. I am a computer person; I am not keen to work with the human body, and even though I was working in the firmware department, I had to learn a lot about the process of insertion of the device into the human body.
