I would brush up on facts about children in their first year of life. I was exposed to different ages, periods of development, food allergies, breastfed and bottle fed, ferberated and co-sleepers, etc. It helps to understand a wide variety of issues babies can have and some idea how to handle it.
If you are the first to arrive you greet the parents and help the babies settle in for the day. You handle the laundry, prepare the bleach and other bottles, give breakfast to children that eat solids, and start a chart to help track each child.
