Metallurgical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the personnel at my site. Everyone was willing to explain every single one of my questions and were willing to let me help them in their daily tasks. I learned a lot from everyone and was always kept busy.

What I wish was different

I wish that my projects had more hands on characteristics. A lot of other interns had more hands on projects.

Advice

Never stop looking to help someone. It is easy to be recognized for what you are doing as long as you vocalize the tasks you have completed to your boss. People like driven workers, especially at Freeport.

Environmental Engineering Intern

What I liked

This internship gave me so much hands on engineering experience and important exposure to Industry. I was located at Freeport McMoRan’s largest copper mine in North America and I got to be a partner of making sure it was running up to code with many Environmental Regulations. I had a great mentor who helped teach me so many things and I was given a project that got me out in the field and actually made an important impact for the company.

What I wish was different

The location is a little remote, the town is owned by the company and there isn’t much out there but the mine. However the are other locations within the company near more populated cities.

Advice

I would recommend that you hit the ground running with your project, ask your mentor and others lots of questions so you can make as much progress on it as you can so you are prepared to I put present in front of your superiors.

I enjoyed getting experience working for a large company on projects that really mattered.

What I wish was different

I personally would have liked to be working more directly in my field, but that does not reflect anything on the job itself.

Advice

I would recommend getting to know your coworkers, it will help you learn more during a short experience.

Global Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

Learning. This opportunity allowed me to finally get some professional experience in a great company. I learned what supply chain was like, living in a small city, making amazing friends with other interns, playing soccer and ultimate frisbee, attending tours, dinners, corporate offices and even an intern conference. I developed an interest and respect for mining and internalized some of their core values, like safety. The competitive wage was the icing on the cake.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been more prepared to get outside my comfort zone. I didn't know that being proactive was encouraged because I was so used to always following instructions in school. This would have opened more opportunities for me.

Advice

Do your best to be prepared for your internship and dont expect to be perfect, you are only human.

Mine Engineer Intern

What I liked

I like that Freeport provided housing in an area were housing was virtually nonexistent. I had the opportunity to live with 4 other guys in company provided housing. I was able to build lasting friendships and experience new cultures. Freeport provided me with the opportunity to experience the actual day to day duties of a drill and blast engineer. Freeport has an excellent college recruiting team. After my internship they got back to me within the month with a return offer.

What I wish was different

Not much. I enjoyed my internship and the experience afforded me thoroughly.

Advice

Learn everyone's roles and never turn down an opportunity to learn another's job. Look for new experiences and most importantly always look at the bright side.

What I liked

The opportunity to create spatial products for company usage was fulfilling. Being able to contribute to the company mission and be treated as an employee was very important to me.

What I wish was different

The general vibe of the company and department was fast, unfriendly, and unorganized. There was a lot of direction given from several different managers that were contradicting.

Go in and work slowly and professionally. Take initiative, do not ask too many questions.

What I liked

Very focused on making internships value-adding experiences for both the intern and the company. Emphasis on safety. Well-developed intern program with good balance between structure and independence in daily work. Concerned and knowledgeable mentors and supervisor.

What I wish was different

That I could have been more integrated and contributing to the regular work performed by the other metallurgists and the problems they were trying to solve, instead of being given a separate problem.

Advice

Build a good relationship with your mentor. Freeport-McMoRan cares about helping you become the professional who want to be, no matter which field. You can learn a lot technically and professionally through the professional relationships you build with your mentor and others you work with there.

I wish that I would have asked for more projects sooner. Once they knew I was ready for more, they gave it to me.

Try to become well acquainted with the electricians, they will help break down what is really happening in the field.

I wish that I had been able to work more. Longer hours and more days would have been great.

Advice

Be willing to talk to people. I met more people at Freeport that were willing to teach me than I ever have. All I had to do was ask them questions. Interns are annoying for many employees so keep in mind that not everyone will assume you are smart and deserving of respect. Respect is earned, it is not a right.

What I liked

I enjoy meeting new people and getting the chance to communicate with all of the interns. The College Recruiting team is such a great team to be a part of. I have learned new valuable skills like working with Excel reports, spreadsheets, and the importance of communicating. I love hearing about the new things that interns have learned during their internship and how this internship impacted them.

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing. Communication is key. If there is ever an issue or if I need assistance on something, I know that I can mention it to my team and they will help me figure something out.

Advice

Don't be afraid to learn new things and listen to your team. You have the opportunity to learn new things, take advantage of it and ask questions. Join your site LinkedIn group and network with the people you will be working with!

Industrial Hygienist Intern

What I liked

There is so much outside of my degree that I got to learn about and experience for myself. I worked on 6 different projects but I was not overwhelmed. I worked with so many different people and it did not feel like a normal internship, it felt like a job. I was treated as if I were a regular employee working there. I loved working around heavy equipment.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you like being around giant trucks, don’t mind getting dirty, and wearing a hard hat and steel toe boots, then this is for you.

What I liked

Freeport McMoran was a great place for me to work, it was my first internship for my major. to be honest, people were so nice, willing, and ready to help. After my project, I was able to shadow most of the departments related to mining engineerings such as Showel planning, Drilling, Blasting, Geology, Ore Control, slope Monitoring, and Drone.

What I wish was different

Senior Paralegal

What I liked

I like the variety. Working as an inhouse paralegal is different than working as a paralegal for a law firm. I do more managing of projects than actual hands on. When I originally interviewed, I had just left a horrible, boring job. I was upfront, and told the hiring manager I'd stay until I got bored. I'm still here.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be flexible. I have been at this job for 28 years and during that time, we acquired another company and was acquired by yet another company. The job responsibilities may change and the work ebbs and flows but if you are flexible, you find opportunities to add to your responsibilities, and possibly lose some of the more mundane tasks.

What I liked

The people here at this location tell you how it is, you don't get some vague response if you have questions. They take you around the mine and show you the entire process. As a process automation engineer, it was their job to control the machines to do what needed to be done, while being controlled by operators. It was very interesting to see controls in industry.

What I liked

Very well rounded internship experience. Friendly and helpful culture throughout the organization. Got to work on projects that had a real-time impact on the company. Freeport uses very advanced technologies and it was a great opportunity getting hands-on experience with some of the most experienced people in the industry.

What I wish was different

It's a very well organized internship program with not very much to change. I wish there was more traveling involved to experience the different lines of products Freeport produces.
