What I liked
I loved getting the chance to shadow in on different surgeries. It was great being able to experience what being a doctor would look like in the future.
What I wish was different
I don’t think anything! I wish I could have stayed longer actually!
Advice
I think everyone should get out of their comfort zone and go shadow abroad. It’s a life changing experience!

Atlantis Medical Fellow
June - July 2019 • Vigo, Pontevedra Province
What I liked
My internship was an amazing experience. I was able to shadow new doctors from all kinds of fields every day. I saw live surgeries up close and was able to speak to doctors directly about procedures. I also learned a lot about the medical care services in Spain, which is very different from the U.S. I also have been given many job offers because of my cultural experience.
What I wish was different
I only wish that it was a longer internship. I had an amazing time and was sad to leave after only a month.
Advice
I would highly recommend learning the language before going on an overseas internship. Language barrier is a big issue when shadowing in another country.

Student Fellow
June 2017 • Madrid, Madrid
What I liked
This was a fellowship for premed students to shadow in European hospitals, so through this program I got to stand in on incredible surgeries and talk to doctors who were experts in the fields that I want to go into. I saw so many incredible things and learned so much, not to mention it was a summer in Spain which was pretty incredible. And because the program made such a huge impact on my life, I am now an Ambassador for the program and have a continued relationship with them
What I wish was different
I wish that I had been placed in a larger city for the first half of my internship, but it was nice to see two different sides of medicine in Spain; the larger city and the small town
Advice
Ask as many questions as you possibly can, whether that is before you start the fellowship or during the fellowship

Atlantis Fellowship
June - July 2019 • Matosinhos Municipality, Porto
What I liked
Everything! The experience was wonderful and insightful. I watched many surgeries and explored Portugal and it was so beautiful! The people are friendly and many know at least a little English.
What I wish was different
There was a strike going on that caused us to miss a day of surgeries, but that was a learning experience on its own. I would avoid tourist spots in the summer next time since they got so crowded.
Advice
Save money and research exchange rates for euros. Know a few phrases in Portuguese, especially "thank you", it goes a long way to receiving friendly help.

Shadowing Fellow
May - June 2019 • Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia
What I liked
Atlantis offers an incredible experience for pre-med students to shadow and assist doctors in all departments of their hospital. I loved that this experience was abroad while also actually relevant to what I want to do post-undergrad.
What I wish was different
Literally nothing. The hosts, the doctors, and all of the fellows I was with were lovely the whole time. I wish I could have stayed there longer!
Advice
With a program offered to college students all across the country, be ready to know no one but about to be best friends with everyone you meet there. If you are pre-med OR considering pre-med I highly recommend this program. It offers such an incredible and intimate program with medicine that really helps you determine if the medical field is the right fit for you AND also connects you to foreign physicians who would be excellent choices for letters of rec.
