Patient Transporter
March 2018 - August 2019 • Bolingbrook, IL
What I liked
The best part was interacting with patients and making them smile and laugh.
What I wish was different
I wish the hours had been more flexible as it did start to interfere with school.
Advice
The best part of the job was being with the patients and trying to make their day just a little bit better. With that being said I learned healthcare is more than just medicine, it's also about forming relationships and being a positive spirit.

Software Development Intern
June - August 2020 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
Interns got brand new Apple technologies shipped to their residence for use during the internship. Also was placed in real development teams to work on products that have direct impacts.
What I wish was different
Mentorship was a bit lacking. Everyone was usually busy doing their own work so it was hard to find people to ask questions and get answers quickly. However, this was a virtual internship so it may be different if it's in-person.

Nurse Extern
May - July 2019 • Detroit, MI
What I liked
Everything! My preceptor and the nurse manager on the floor were wonderful. It was a very welcoming, warm learning environment and I was able to learn so many new things that I did not get exposure to in my clinicals. It made coming to work easy. I was excited to learn everyday.
What I wish was different
I wish we were able to pass meds.
Advice
For anyone thinking of gaining experience at a summer externship - go for it! I gained so much experience and insight into nursing. Ascension is definitely a health system I am strongly looking to work for after graduation. As a result of my experience, I made many connections and hopefully I will get a job there later this year :).

What I liked
teamwork centered environment; fast paced; a lot of opportunities to learn; utilizing a broad set of skills; helping Milwaukee; benefits, PTO, shift differential, on-call and over time pay
What I wish was different
there's times we're short staffed,
Advice
If you are considering the health care field and like working for people, becoming a CNA or EDT is the best thing you could do. Working on a hospital floor and in the ED has allowed me to learn so much about the healthcare field in general. It has allowed me to practice a lot of what I have learned in school and at the same time what I have gained through work helps me academically.

Patient Care Tech
June 2019 • Indianapolis, IN
What I liked
I have really benefited from getting the hands on experience with the patient population I interact with (neonates). I have also really enjoyed the experience of networking with different positions within the hospital and learning about how this specific hospital runs everything.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have started earlier and after orientation I wish I was able to get more hands on experience providing direct care to my patient population (neonates).
Advice
Don't give up no matter how many jobs you apply to. Be very confident in your abilities and always be willing to jump in and help wherever your unit may need it.

Nurse Intern
May 2019 • Southfield, MI
What I liked
I was able to work 1:1 with a nurse during the summer. I was able to learn by watching her and then performing skills by myself. I learned valuable nursing and communication skills throughout my time. I gained so much confidence in my nursing practice after the internship ended. Everyone on the unit was accepting and willing to help me learn.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have taken opportunities to have an off unit day. It would be interesting to see other units and work with other nurses to see how they practice.
Advice
You gain so much experience working 1:1 with a nurse. It is not the same as a nursing school rotation because you can see the whole picture of nursing rather than focusing on one or two patients. I learned what a nurse does on a day to day basis and how to organize my time.
