Altria

Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

All of my coworkers were amazing and extremely supportive. I really enjoyed the on-boarding process and felt that my time was valued. During the internship, I was able to individually go in the field with over 10 established employees which gave me great insight into the company. There are people who have worked at this company for over 30 years and people who have been here for less than 5, I felt this showed that the company values their employees at all stages of their career. Altria was also very transparent from the beginning about the business that they are in, which made the idea of working for a Tobacco company less intimidating. My favorite part about the internship was having an amazing mentor. My mentor really cared about my professional development and constantly offered constructive feedback.

What I wish was different

During the internship, we had to complete a territory and key account project. We were not given instructions for the territory project until about halfway through the internship, which made it a little difficult to conduct all necessary research in such a short amount of time. I wish during the internship we were given the information for the projects at the beginning so we could start to look for trends in our stores at an earlier time. I also wish we were given a little more guidance on the territory project from our managers.

Advice

Go into this experience with an open mind. The company is great and the employees are amazing, so make sure to try to build those relationships from the beginning. Make sure to keep asking questions and seek feedback from your mentor and managers. Curiosity and networking will get you far in any career you are in!

Sales and Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed and valued the Sales and Marketing summer internship that I completed with Altria. The internship was comprised of a combination of in-field days, with Territory Sales Managers, and online days comprised of software training, networking sessions, intern team-work, and business skills development workshops sponsored by employee-resource groups. Throughout the Internship, two large projects were completed: an individual project that challenged me to identify business opportunities, employ data analysis skills, and present to a leadership board, as well as a group project that allowed me to work at the corporate level with a Key Account (mine was Sheetz). In addition, the company culture and the way Altria treats their employees is amazing! I had a mentor, coach, and manager that consistently challenged and supported me. I was also able to learn about many different departments and roles within the company; everyone, no matter what level of the company, was happy to speak about their role and give advice in one-on-one networking meetings. I happily accepted the full-time position, as I learned Altria is a company that I love to work for, and I'm looking forward to the full time benefits including a company vehicle, great pay, and an educational refund program.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work in-person with my intern team. While we collaborated a lot, it was mainly virtual (partially due to COVID). It does take some time getting used to not working in a traditional office setting, but by the end of the internship I found that I preferred this hybrid mode of work.

Advice

I would advise applicants to be open-minded about working in the Tobacco Industry. Apply and go into the internship or job position open to learning about the company vision, the way employees interact, and the way Altria values their employees. If you do this, I think you will find that working for this company is a great career choice.

Territory Sales Manager

May - August 2017 • Orange, CA

What I liked

The internship was well organized and structured. Their training program was designed to push the interns intellectually but at a reasonable and detailed pace.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have provided us more notice on where we would have been located. Also the interns were very spread out geographically. Would have been nice to be closer to coworkers when being in a new city.

Advice

Do not procrastinate on the final presentation. Focus on learning the role of a TSM. If you can see yourself doing that job and understand it you will be a good fit for a future hire.

Territory Sales Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The people! Great sense of mentorship and people that are always willing to help you learn and grow. There are many perks that came with the internship such as fun experiences and meals and the actual compensation is higher than your hourly wage. There is a lot of autonomy and freedom to create your own schedule to get your work done and people ready to support you through this.

What I wish was different

More interaction with other interns- due to an uncentralized location, you don't get to interact much with other interns unless there are specific corporate bonding events.

What I liked

I liked how autonomous I was able to be. I really got out what I put into the internship since I was on my own working as if I was a full-time Territory Sales Manager. They really trust you with the work you do.

Advice

Ask more questions. There is so much information they have for you about the position and asking questions will help you retain the huge amount of information in the short period of time.

Territory Sales Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I loved how I was granted freedom with my position and how even though you worked alone, you had a large network to reach out to. I especially liked the second half of the summer where I got to work with a specific convenience store chain and do research for them.

What I wish was different

I wish the training was a little more standardized. I was only learning from my supervisor who taught me some methods and had certain focuses while others varied. It seemed as though each intern was on a different page.

Advice

Be open to new experiences and ask questions. Don't be afraid to mess up and put yourself out there.
