Uber

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the autonomy with which I was able to work with. My manager usually just gave me a big-picture idea of my goal, and left me to achieve it however I thought was best.

What I wish was different

Although, I loved my team, It would have been cool to be able to work on/with different teams, to get a better sense of what each group did.

Advice

Prepare to work. Working at a big tech company isn't easy, and requires hard work, lots of effort, and the ability to take critique.

Uber

August - September 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Got to work whenever I wanted. Didn’t pay taxes (yet) because you’re your own boss. Met a lot of interesting people, especially people trying to “make it” in LA from all over the world.

What I wish was different

Wish I created a structured schedule. Working your own hours is great but it also gives the opportunity to make a lot of excuses. Maybe I don’t want to work today because I made enough last night or whatever the case may be.

Advice

This is not a long term gig. This is a month or two month job. The money is great but once tax season comes around your hourly wage looks a lot worse than you thought. Also your car will start to dwindle.

Great experience! I was very lucky with my team and project. Everything went smoothly.

What I wish was different

Nothing. Everything went great.

Advice

Go to career fairs! I never would've heard of my program and applied if I hadn't talked to the company representative in person.

Uber driver

October 2017 • Chico, CA

What I liked

I love being able to go any where in California. Meeting new people and sharing experiences with them.

What I wish was different

Knowing different areas. If I had to drive far to pick some one up only to drop them off a short distance away is really annoying and wasteful of my gadgets and time.

Advice

Be open to people. It is your personal space in your personal car, but people pay for your services to get them safely from point A to point B

June 2017 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Meeting interesting people and having good conversations. Seeing parts of my state that I have not seen before, and eating good food that I am nearby for lunch. My favorite part is that you can pick your own hours and drive only when you want to.

What I wish was different

Not much. I enjoyed driving for uber for the most part all around, and have no complaints really other than problems with the app that have been updated by now.

Advice

It's a job that is a lot better than it sounds, and one I would recommend if you can do it in your area. I think it is a great summer job and a good way to make some money quickly towards a goal.

City Operations and Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Dar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam Region

What I liked

I loved the autonomy I had over my work which gave me a lot of confidence when it came to how I was positively impacting and adding value to the company. In the same vein, I was trusted with presenting my research or my stats without too much supervision which made me way more accountable of my deliverables. There was a great work structure and environment that was always fast paced with multiple facets that created an exciting work space. Overall, made me realize that I want to work in the tech industry.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to stay longer and make an even bigger impact in the company.

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of the resources available, and if there is something that you would like to access do not be afraid to ask for it. I wanted access to the SQL learning database, it took a couple of weeks but I finally got granted access by someone a continent away. I was able to leave my internship being proficient in SQL and with some background in Python, all this when I had no previous coding experience.

Hardware Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

After spending a summer interning at Uber ATG, I felt like I became a much better engineer. As an intern I had real responsibilities and worked with qualified engineers who were willing to help me learn new skills. This coupled with the great work atmosphere and employee benefits made for a phenomenal internship experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing in particular.

Advice

I recommend taking the internship as an opportunity to learn as much as you can. At Uber, the full-time engineers are very willing to teach you new skills and provide more opportunities to learn. If there is a subject that you are interested in learning more about, even if it is unrelated to your responsibilities, I believe that it is worth reaching out and asking about it.

Full-Stack Software Engineer

What I liked

Great working environment with everyone really believing strongly in the product and our goals. Everyone was really passionate, some of the best engineers in the valley, and really open and helpful.

What I wish was different

It's a big company now, so it definitely can be hard to find your place, but they do a really good job in the internship program to try to expose you to as many aspects as they can.
