Estimating Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really liked how Turner gave me a construction knowledge-based foundation. They had many learning resources which I could access at any time. When I had some downtime I would go on the learning center to learn more about whatever commodity I wanted to study such as HVAC, plumbing, or electrical works.

What I wish was different

I wish they had a better system to connect all the other interns. I also wish that they had a different way of introducing the interns to the team rather than just throwing them into the office. It would have been nice to have a meet and greet with the managers and the other interns in the office.

Advice

I would go into this job ready to learn a lot. Especially in the construction field. If you are not civil, then it is a little different than what you learn in school. Things are less theoretical and more on the business side of life.

Field Intern

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how, regardless of the Covid-19 outbreak, Turner went out of their way to make my experience beneficial. At every step I was challenged and encouraged to learn more. The field staff made sure that was actively learning.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work more.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Interns are not expected to be experts, the point of the experience is to learn about the company and the industry. Ask as many questions as you can!

Marketing Intern

June 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked that I got the chance to learn about the business behind the construction industry as it was never my intention to get involved in construction. I was a key factor in the RFP drafting process and I was happy I got the chance to learn the ins and outs of attacking a proposal and how to push it towards eventual completion.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had a chance to work on the social media & digital marketing to boost Turner's brand online. Instead, my day-to-day role consisted of drafting RFPs, assisting with internal marketing communications, and coordinating Turner events.

Advice

Don't limit yourself only to opportunities that seem appealing to you. This internship was a great example of a golden opportunity that I stumbled upon. I never intended to be a marketing intern at a construction company, but I have learned a lot. At the end of the day, it is still valuable professional work experience that will ultimately help boost your resume.

Construction Project Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

The environment was engaging and offered much independence to explore different avenues within the construction industry. Supervisor gave me a main task and allowed me to assist the different teams on our site which allowed me to learn a lot more.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more work for interns as I'm the type of person to want to be busy from start to finish in my work day.

Advice

Be consistently driven in your willingness to learn and adapt. Employers will want a bright individual who can take on difficult assignments and ask questions when needed.

Estimating engineer

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The best company I've ever worked for. They deeply care about their employees and it shows.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't lived so far from the main office in downtown Cleveland, which made the daily commute long.

Advice

Don't be afraid to explore employment opportunities that are slightly out of your major. There are more jobs out there than you think and you might find one that you like better than the typical job for your major.

Engineering intern

June - November 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved getting to help everyone on the project with different tasks. It exposed me to a lot of new things I had never experienced before. My favorite part was working on a punchlist and getting to learn how to interact with subcontractors and foreman.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to try more MEP related tasks.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It’s better to ask a lot of questions and get it done in a shorter amount of time than try on your own and take hours.

Human Resources Intern

December 2018 - June 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My internship was very educational. I learned how an HR team functions and a decent amount about the construction industry. Everyone on my team were helpful, kind hearted, and a joy to work with. Overall an excellent internship and an excellent company to work for.

What I wish was different

The location was a bit inconvenient but the neighbourhood was very nice.

Advice

Stay on top of your work and write EVERYTHING down.

Construction Project Management Intern

April - September 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I love the values and standards of the company I worked for. My coworkers were so understanding and patient with me. I felt comfortable asking questions and didn't feel embarrassed. I got a lot of hands-on experience working in the field as well as the office. I learned new softwares, principles, and networked with others.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had another intern with me on the project. There were many other interns working for the same company, but stationed at different projects. Although, since I was the only intern on my specific project, I got more hands-on experience than any other intern normally would.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't feel embarrassed if you don't know anything, you're an intern and you there to learn! Be yourself! :)

What I liked

The atmosphere and people that you get to work with at Turner Construction are amazing. Coming to work everyday was so interesting, especially in my role, because every day was something different out in the field.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had asked more questions. Everyone you're working with at Turner is so knowledgeable that even if you think it isn't a valid question, you'll learn something.

Advice

I would say to just fully embrace being able to get hands on experience while working for Turner. It may seem like you have a lot of time in the semester, but it flies by so take advantage of it while you can!

Field Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Bridgewater, NJ

What I liked

My experience at Turner provided me with an extremely diverse look into the world of construction! Not only was I given challenging, value-based tasks on my job assignment, but I had the opportunity to explore other projects that my fellow interns were assigned to and see what kind of work they were doing there. I learned so much in the short amount of time, the team really put their all into making my experience as meaningful as possible. Everyone was willing and ready to offer their knowledge and mentorship.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience had been longer. I would have had the opportunity to take on long-term projects with more impact to the project. We also would have been able to tour more of our fellow interns job sites.

Advice

Enter this experience ready to learn! There's such diversity among every team in terms of their own experience, both on the job and in life. Everyone had something different and valuable to offer.
