Project Destined

Program Manager

February - April 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This was my third time participating in the program, and I was amazed by how it developed throughout the term. According to what I heard, site visits went more smoothly for teams, and the quality of the interns has undoubtedly improved. I appreciate how the staff was more helpful in relieving the PMs of some of the burdensome responsibilities, giving us more time to concentrate on the development of the intern.

What I wish was different

Although intern quality has improved, there are still numerous problems with the interns' commitment once accepted into the program, which causes many of them to drop out. I believe that these concerns need to be addressed first. Second, I believe that additional lectures, rather than speaker events, should be included to help interns broaden their understanding of the subject because, from what I've heard, most speaker events are just repetitions. Finally, there were sessions where program managers could pick up more real estate knowledge, whether through a required Coursera course or through lectures or training that we might attend.

Advice

The key to success is availability. If you can't be available or are working a full-time job, don't join because you won't be adding any value to the interns' experience. You should either do that or have good time management skills. And finally, make sure your team has a certain dynamic and chemistry that encourages interaction among members without your constant encouragement to find ways to establish a rapport right away.

What I liked

Project Destined is an amazing commercial real estate program that provides students exposure to some of the top firms in the country! Project Destined executive series allows students to learn from top talent in different industries such as development, private equity, asset management, and many other areas within commercial real estate. I love that I got to interact with many people from all different parts of the country and world. And I love what Project Destined is building in Detroit, MI.

What I wish was different

I wish I had got involved with this program earlier, then I would have been able to take advantage of the opportunities that Project Destined provides and been exposed to the material earlier. Though I have been lucky to build great relationships and gain opportunities in a short period of time as a senior, getting as much exposure earlier, is always key!

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is stay engaged, and take advantage of all of the opportunities that are presented! Project Destined provides access to so many programs, scholarships, internships, full-time roles, financial modeling, etc and students should sign up and participate as much as possible. You can learn so much by asking questions, networking, and keeping your hands on the pulse of this program! Take advantage, there are so many people who are involved in this program that want to see students succeed!

What I liked

I loved how Project Destined felt like a sense of community: being able to meet other students within my college (Baruch College) plus other students who are in a similar finance/real estate careers/majors. I also loved being about to gain so much knowledge in real estate and on top of that also gain skills in like market analysis, financial modeling and enhance my skills in teamwork and public speaking.

What I wish was different

I wished there were more executive speaker series at different times throughout the day/week. I believe this would be more helpful in a way where if I had free time, I would be able to join more of these zoom meetings, network and gain even more valuable knowledge in real estate.

Advice

Network!! Don't be afraid to reach out to your peers or even connect with all the professionals that were speakers within the zoom meetings.

The focus on developing an #ownership mindset is one of the program's standout features. Learning about real estate from this perspective has fundamentally changed the way I approach my work and has given me a newfound sense of confidence and motivation. Overall, I can't recommend Project Destined enough. If you're looking for a platform to learn about real estate and gain the skills and mindset necessary for success in the industry, this is it. I really like that Project Destined is a place that constantly wants to expose students to great opportunities. Students are provided with the basic concepts of real estate and from there are able to expand their knowledge as they join other Project Destined programs. What I really love about Project Destined is that there is always a new program or position to apply for. So far in less than a year I've been able to take part in 4 of Project Destined's programs and each one offers something different and is related to different aspects of real estate. Project Destined is somewhere that truly breeds success and makes us students very well rounded!
