What I liked

I loved working in an environment I love. I got to know people from so many different backgrounds and counties. It was a very rewarding experience keeping the park clean and knowing it's clean because of you.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have stayed in a dorm during the summer.

Advice

Be ready to work hard. It's all hard work but it's very rewarding for what it is.

Area supervisor of Catering and Special Events

May - August 2019 • Sandusky, OH

What I liked

I loved the people that I met and the ability I had to grow personally and professionally. This internship pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me see what it took to run multiple different events

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to network with other interns that were there. I loved my coworkers and the other interns in my department, but I wish I had a chance to get to know more people outside if my department and share experiences.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, it might be over whelming at first but in the end it will be worth it.

Ride Operator

May 2019 • Sandusky, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed working a lot of hours, building my communication skills, working with a team everyday, test riding my ride everyday, and ultimately having fun. This job was exciting and extremely challenging. It was my 2nd year as a ride operator.

What I wish was different

I wish that management and different departments at Cedar Point were more consistent. Sometimes it seemed that park polices were overridden from other departments or management above us just to avoid guest complaints. This was concerning as many of these policies were in place for safety reasons and having the rules bended when we were taught something else made it frustrating doing my job. It was also challenging to work so many hours in a row as sometimes our schedule was changed late at night for the next morning with little to no notice.

Advice

This job increased my communication skills enormously, created a strong work ethic, challenged me constantly, and was a large learning experience for me. I recommend others work this job as it develops you not only professionally but also personally.

Guest Services Associate

May - August 2019 • Sandusky, OH

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with.

What I wish was different

The hours are intense near the start, sometimes breaking into a 70-80 hour week. Typically they then level off to about 30-40 hours a week. You will get scheduled every day until they're fully staffed. Sometimes these shifts are scheduled till 1 AM. Sometimes, those 1 AM shifts go till 2:30 if you're cleaning up an event. Housing will routinely take up a good third of your paycheck. If you're an associate, and not an intern, expect to be treated a little differently, as if you're not as capable. If you call off 4 times throughout those 4 summer months, you're fired, doctors note or not.

Advice

If you decide to work here, live close by, not in their dorms. Be prepared for a lot of heat. If you don't like the heat, don't go. If you go for guest services, you need to have a thick skin, angry guests will find your weakest point and dig in on it. Never tell people the truth if the truth is scary. Is a ride down due to being struck by lightning? Maintenance. Did most of its motors fail? Maintenance. It's always maintenance until you're told you can say otherwise .

Server

April - October 2018 • Sandusky, OH

What I liked

Overall, working at Perkins Restaurant for Cedar Point was an amazing experience. Though the hourly wage was not the greatest (it is minimum wage for servers), I made more than expected due to tips. I met so many new people and learned from them and their experiences. The management is awesome. They love to have fun and joke around, but not before all the work is done.

What I wish was different

I wish there were less servers this past season. They accidentally over-hired on the amount of servers we had which lead to smaller sections and a few less hours.

Advice

Go to the week long training before Perkins and Cedar Point officially opens. You will gain so much experience and practice making you one step ahead of all the new servers. This will help you get better shifts and table sections which ultimately, helps you make more.
